SPJ DePaul Social Media and Ethics Twitter Chat

SPJ executive board students prepare for the chat.

As part of its required Ethics programming, SPJ DePaul played host to a Twitter chat titled “Social Media and Ethics” on Nov. 4.

Steve Buttry, community editor with TBD.com in Washington, D.C., was the featured guest along with panelists Craig Kanalley of the Huffington Post and Scott Leadingham of SPJ’s Quill magazine.

The event drew 79 participants who posted 655 tweets using the #spjchat hashtag. Eighteen of the participants were DePaul University College of Communication undergraduate and graduate students. Others came from all over the United States, Canada and Europe.

The chat received national attention, earning a mention in Harvard’s Nieman Lab website, and social media sites TrendsMap and MuckRack.

SPJ DePaul student executive board members organized the event and participated in the chat. SPJ DePaul chapter adviser and Journalist’s Toolbox creator Mike Reilley moderated it.
